When you think of memorable country estates you often think of the wonderful Wrought iron Gates that grace the pillared entrances . The gate is truly the welcome mat to the property . In Years past there was alot of thought that went into the design of the elegant scrollwork and interesting ornaments to give the visual effect that the deigners and Architects where envisioning. Often Times they were utilizing designs that traveled from the French and English countryside and reached back centuries . The Architect and Clients love of this art form of the forge was a true transending collaboration. Wrought iron was a standard of luxury and clientsthat were building exclusive residences needed the security and the elegance that the metal would provide. The wonderful hand made gate is hard to come by today but with the right Designer and Artist Blacksmith this is still possible. When one views a Hand forged gate it celebrates your arrival and you get a sense of tradition and perminence. You can feel the hammermarks of the craftsman that are frozen in time . It is the uniqeness of its one of a kind surface and texture incororated in the finished product that is the true rareity .

Hammersmith Studios Just Recently completed a Decorative Hand forged Wrought iron hinge for a customer . We could not be more pleased with the outcome. It was designed by Hammmersmith Studios for a Children’ s play room and was a main focal point for the interior design concept. The material chosen for the hinge was three sixteenth thick mild steel and was embellish with decorative motifs such as leaves and funny little creaturesto create a sense of whimsy. there where some interesting challenges with this project such as properly aligning the hinge barrels so as to allow the door to swing level. after any hour of tweaking and adjusting it worked perfectly and the Customer had it installed for his holiday party and after all that what it is all about . Sometimes we get questions about our work . Lets face it Hand forged Architectural ironwork isn’t usually the hot topic of many cocktail parties. There is a lot of confusion about what it is and what it is not..Architectural ironwork is a term used to designate any metalwork that embellishes building or structures and is added for safety and functional art . The main uses include Hand railings Driveway gates , Window grills , Balcony brackets. Hand forged ironwork is also another term that can be quite confusing to some people. If you are interested in Hand forged iron work than you should be looking for a Architectural blacksmith company versus a blacksmith . A general blacksmith my have the skill to forged work such as hinges and door hardware or kitchen accessories but may not have the Special skills or expertise to create larger scale work such as railing and gates. Also they may not understand how to incorporate the correct design vocabulary into the project to arrive at a balanced design. Architectural ironwork is a product that really has to work and function properly, but just as important it has to look right with the building and its surroundings. The hand forged designation means that the work is formed using hammers and Anvils after it has been heated in a Blacksmiths forge or Furnace to approximately 1800 degrees. Be Sure to ask the craftsman about the shop and the tools they use and if possible take a tour of their ,shop you will find it a fascinating place to see.,
e will love to share his work . http://www.hammersmithstudio.com http://www.facebook.com/hammersmithstudiosllc

Hand forged Iron for your home is a very personal design consideration. You have to have a understanding of your taste as well as the style of home or space that you want to decorate.
Is the space sleek and minimalist of is it traditional in nature?
if you are in the market for Forged metalwork you must seek out the best possible designer and craftsman that understands your desires and needs . Plus the artist Blacksmith should have your wishes as an important consideration and not be more concerned with his or her own artist interests and taste. Keep in mind that you as the client are the one that is hiring the artist . Ask lots of questions and focus on the scale of the work to be completed as well as the finish surface . Get some samples of the craftsman’s work that is similar to the product that you desire him to create for you. Some things to think about are that cost is different than value and that your budget for a project is extremely helpful when coming up with pricing scale that is comfortable for you.
shop around for similar work but if a price is higher than you imagined ask why is the pricing such . Let the craftsman educate you a bit about the work and materials involved because you are talking about a handmade product and not a production made piece. Always ask for references and enjoy the process because artist craftsmen surely does. For the most part all they want is that you appreciate their God given talent and to be compensated fairly for their labor .

Boston’s Wrought ironwork has a very distinctive flavor . It is Decidedly English in Nature. The work produced by the working blacksmiths and Wrought iron craftsmen were from Old world stock and truly understood the design vocabulary of the designs set out by the Architects of the Boston Area. In particular they were well versed in the decorative style of the Georgian style English work with its very straight laced decorative designs and the use of rectangle stock was all hints to its origins. Another important feature was the use of Repousse foliage and Acanthus leafwork .The leaf work was of a more stout material as to be able to withstand the ravages of the Boston Weather. Decorative banding or collars were for the most part made in a more molding shape versus the flat stock type. the use of mechanical fasteners such as screws and rivets were used for all fittings of the structure of the gates or fences . Some other interesting decorative elements employed were things such as flame twist and hand forged picket points with very fancy spire or obelisk shapes as finials which were very common on the better work produced.
